Final for this one, colored, shaded and ready for action =D if anything this serves as not only a homage to the old comics but to our childhoods as well...in the 90s!!!

So hope you guys like this one as much/more than the sketch, lets hope we see these guys back again ( I think they never had Sally in any of the games) and I don't know about you guys, but I think Sally looks uber cute in those shoes ^^; later for now, fellow busters!!

I like the idea of Sonic and co. partying on a pile of badniks and it's fun identifying the different pieces in the junk. What bothers me is your penchant for sexualizing Sally, which distracts from fun atmosphere of the moment. It's a clash in tone.

Shoes and gloves are accessory and shoes are shoes so neither count as clothes, which means when she puts on that vest she is wearing more than Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Big, Vector, Espio, Mighty, Ray, and Silver ALL combined. I don't see you hating on them for being naked, double standard much?

frrrig Sally. Did she ever made an apperences in the games? Or only in the comics, i remember. My very first comic issues was a Sonic one. I never collected them, it was more of a OH LOOK SONIC, buy. And that's that.

Plus, she was of many "Ricky" squirrels rescued in the Genesis era, as per the 1991 bible [ [link] ] & promo comic [ [link] ], both made by Sega of America prior to Sonic 2 & the arrival of Tails.

well, SEGA sorta owned her, but they sold her to Archie to give them full control over the character after the SatAM TV show was canceled.
SEGA DID own her, just not anymore.

They still own her. To quote Ian Flynn, "Ultimately SEGA owns everything in the book. If it’s associated with Sonic in the book, it is by extension SEGA’s. From my understanding, that is why BioWare could so freely emulate the Dark Legion for the Marauders [in Sonic Chronicles]. I know there was some confusion elsewhere concerning rights to SatAM. As it was explained, SEGA owns the intellectual property—-the characters and such-—but DiC retains the rights to the animation. So you wouldn’t see SEGA reselling SatAM boxsets willy-nilly. Conversely, DiC wouldn’t be able to just up and make a new Sonic cartoon."

It's ironic that SoJ grew resentful of the success of SoA in the early 90s, especially when SoA pretty much ran the whole shebang back then & considering that Naka himself came down upon his fellow Japanese in saying, "Why can't you do things the way the Americans and Europeans did? Why aren't you guys as successful as they are? We've been around longer." The irony comes in when you realize that, in truth, SoA existed before SoJ because, "Nakayama was brought into Sega Enterprises largely based on the efforts of an American--David Rosen, who was always impressed with Nakayama's business sense. Once he got in, however, Nakayama seems to have decided that the Japanese knew best. He gave Kalinske some latitude when it came to marketing Genesis. Toward the tail end of the Genesis period, however, Nakayama's pre-determination that the Japanese know best became very apparent."

This rivalry-—and the rash of politically motivated business decisions that came out of it—-are often cited in what ultimately led to the downfall of the gaming giant, culminating in the company's exit from the hardware market in 2001. For Sonic, it meant that a lot of what could have been simply never was.

In lament's terms, SoJ's petty, selfish, and--honestly--stupid resentment & jealousy nearly wiped out Sonic completely & almost took SEGA itself with 'em!

Actually, in Sonic Spinball, Sally, Bunnie, Rotor and I believe Muttski (maybe Antoine too, but my memory is sketchy) make a brief appearance. They pop out of these roboticizers if you strike them enough times.

Nice picture! I really like the coloring you did with this, the bright colors combined with the yellowish, almost sepia backdrop. The smashed up badniks look great, you put a lot of detail in them I see, and Sally does look like an interesting addition who doesn't seem out of place.

Interesting, it looks like really early versions of Sally were based on Ricky the Squirrel.
Reply
:icontherealrno:
TherealRNO Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2011
Yes. Ricky was moreso a placeholder name for the species itself, since there were mutliples of them in the first few games & given how much of the early Gensis era was not only marketed to the U.S. but actually made there, Sega of America took one of the Ricky models & turned it into Sally, who over time, became the first Americanized character 90s kids from Sonic's first-ever dive into television recognize (since the weekly syndicated comedy AoStH & the more drama-centric "SatAM" [aptly nicknamed so by fans due to its timeslot] aired within the same week of debuting).

Yeah, if I remember correctly she was first mentioned in a promo comic for Sonic the Hedgehog around the time of when the first game was launched. She also appeared in the Fleetway comics, albeit as a completely different character. I myself am using Ricky and Flicky as major characters in the first story arc of my Sonic fan fiction which is inspired by Sonic 1 and the promo comic. I was going to call Ricky Sally Acorn like in the promo comic but avoided this due to the fact that people would keep getting confused with her Archie portrayal and then start bugging me to throw in other Archie stuff like Scourge and whatnot.

which is why sonic is a multi-verse--just like the comics of dc & marvel--so there's something in it for everyone, although the wars over what's official (when, really, all universes are sega-approved & thus canon) & who gets with whom (when it's dependant on the universe & branch of sega you follow) get in the way.
